Question: Would it be moral to grade exams, so that all students get C’s? If not, is it moral for the state to redistribute incomes?

Leveling Grades

If a teacher decided to grade an exam so that every student got a C would that be moral? Clearly it wouldn’t be. If all the students receive C’s regardless of how they really do, it will have eliminated the incentive to learn and progress. Any student who tries and works hard to learn a topic will be punished for doing well on the exam. Instead of receiving the A or B they deserved they are punished and given a C. Also, any student who slacks and doesn’t try to learn the concept will be rewarded for doing bad on the exam. Instead of failing the class they are automatically rewarded with a C.

Therefore, most students are going to choose not learn the concept and still be rewarded. It has always been and always will be that human nature is to take the easy way out.  This incentivizes students to not work, to not learn the concept, and to not progress. Obviously, this is immoral. No one should encourage a student to not work and fail. Students need to be rewarded for how well they really did on the exam so that they are encouraged to learn the concept.

Redistributing Income

As you can see, it is definitely immoral to grade an exam so that all students get C’s. So, what makes it moral for the government to be redistributing income? It is the same concept as with the exam. People are rewarded for not working and not benefiting their fellow man. Many people work hard to provide a beneficial good or service to their fellow man. Other people then can voluntarily choose to purchase these people’s goods or services with their money. Other people choose to not work to benefit their fellow man and they don’t have much money as a result.

When the government redistributes income, they steal the money from the people who benefit their fellow man and gives it to people who don’t work to benefit their fellow man.  This is definitely not moral. People who help their fellow man have their rewards (their money) stolen and given to people who don’t help their fellow man. The only way to call this moral is to believe that theft is an acceptable act and almost everyone will tell you it’s not.

redistributing income is theft

Not only is this immoral but it is bad for society. This once again encourages people not to work. When people’s reward for their work is stolen it removes the incentive to work. No one wants to work hard to earn something just to have it taken away and when no one works society can’t progress. The redistribution of income is not only immoral it will eventually destroy our society.
