Question: What is my most important skill that I can use in starting my business this year?
There are millions of skills that are important to business. I think I have some skills that with development could become of great use to me in starting my own business. These skills would be website development and direct-response/internet marketing. I am definitely just a beginner in these fields but I have the tools to become good at them.
Why Website Development is Important
Website development and internet marketing is crucial for success in business today. Basically every successful business has a website. Most people today search for businesses online. The old method the Yellow Pages is very quickly dying out. The web is an amazing marketing tool. If a business doesn’t have a website then they are missing out on the best type of prospects. The prospects that are actively searching for a business like theirs.
Without a website businesses must rely on interruption advertising: when the prospect doesn’t want to see/here the ad. For example, a radio ad would be considered interruption advertising. The person wants to be listening to music not the ad. If businesses use the web, then generally the only people who will see there website/ads are somewhat interested in what they do. These people will be much easier to sell then the latter. For example, if you are searching for and wanted some toothpaste, then wouldn’t it be easier for someone to convince you to buy that toothpaste.
Why Direct-Response/Internet Marketing is Important
Direct-response/internet marketing ties right into all this. All successful businesses have to market their product and or service. One of the best ways for a smaller business to do this is with direct-response/internet marketing. This is because this type of marketing has less risk and a lower cost. A great example of this is Google AdWords.
With Google AdWords businesses get a link at the top of the search results when someone searches for something related to their product/service. Then it takes them to a landing page on the businesses website. Where they see an ad that is designed to get them to take an action-step like ordering something or requesting a quote. Businesses pay for AdWords on a pay per click basis. If businesses have good landing pages then AdWords is cheap. This is because they are only paying for people who see their ad and hopefully a good percentage of those people will take the action-step. Most people that see the AdWords ad are searching for a business which I have already explained is good. AdWords is just one way to do online marketing. There are many others.
I have only scratched the surface on why website development and direct-response/internet marketing are so important. Basically every business can benefit from someone who has these skills. That is why I am working on developing these skills so that one day I can have a successful business.
