woman taking an exam to earn college credit

The best and most efficient way to earn college credit is by using CLEP exams. People of all ages can take these exams. They can be taken anywhere in the U.S. at anytime. CLEP exams are inexpensive and can save you tens maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars. They allow anyone to earn college credit for what they already know. One of my favorite features of CLEP exams is that they make it so anyone can test out of entire college classes. CLEP exams are a very powerful tool now we’ll look a little closer at the details.

How CLEP Exams Work

Currently there are 34 CLEP exams. They come in a wide variety of topics in math, science, business, and the humanities. If someone passes a CLEP exam, then they will be rewarded 3 college credits or 6 for the harder ones. It will also count as having completed a college course in that subject. For example, if someone passes the CLEP exam for college mathematics then they will earn 6 college credits and will not have to take that course in college. If someone takes enough CLEP exams, then they can even test out of college entirely. One of the instructors in the Ron Paul Curriculum used CLEP exams to earn his bachelors degree when he graduated high school at 18.

There are two ways to take a CLEP exams. The first way is to go to a testing center. The second way is to take it via remote proctoring (my preferred method). The first is self-explanatory, you just go to a testing center and take the test. The second method allows anyone to take the test anywhere in the U.S. With remote proctoring you can take a CLEP exam on your laptop/computer at your own home or wherever you please (as long as the room meats the environmental requirements).

CLEP Exams can Save You a lot of Money

CLEP exams can also save you a lot of money. The exam itself only costs $89. If you take it via remote proctoring, then it will cost an extra $30. This is very cheap considering the alternative. If you use CLEP exams to test out of one, two, or even four years you’ll save tens of thousands of dollars. I think going to college is way overpriced that is why I love this benefit of CLEP exams. They can save you from going to college and wasting time and money on pointless classes that don’t help you towards your major.

Requirements for Taking a CLEP Exam

There are not many requirements to be eligible to take CLEP exams but there are a few. Everyone who wants to take a CLEP exam must:

  • Be 13 years old or older
  • Be located in the U.S. (excludes U.S. territories) or be DANTES-funded
  • Have a government issued ID
  • If the exam is being taken via remote proctoring, then the computer and room must meet technical and environmental requirements

My Experience with CLEP Exams

I was first introduced to CLEP exams by the Ron Paul Curriculum. So far I have passed two CLEP exams with flying colors. I passed the Western Civilization 1 exam and I passed the College Algebra exam. This never would have been possible without the Ron Paul Curriculum. I would never even have heard of CLEP exams if it wasn’t for the Ron Paul Curriculum. They teach their courses on the college level and they structure them so that students can pass CLEP exams. I only used the resources provided by the Ron Paul Curriculum and a few practice tests to pass these exams. My plan is to pass enough CLEP exams so that I can start college as a junior and I know the Ron Paul Curriculum will help me along my way.
