Question: Why is this theme still popular today?
The “Historia & Tale of Doctor Johannes Faustus” was a tale of Johannes Faustus a sorcerer that covenanted with Satan. It describes that Faustus sold his soul to the Devil. For some petty immediate benefits but when his contract was almost up, he regretted his decision. The book serves as a Christian warning not to sacrifice your soul to Satan for fame, fortune, etc.

Ever since this book, this theme of someone making a covenant with Satan then later coming to regret has been used in movies and literature throughout the ages. I think this theme has remained popular because it shows people not to fall into self destructive behavior and think about the consequences of their actions. When someone in a story self-consciously makes a contract with the devil it shows that they are degrading themselves and end up sentencing themselves to eternity in hell. These people don’t think of the consequences of their actions and they condemn themselves to eternal suffering. They serve as a warning to people to think about the consequences of their actions and not destroy themselves. That is why these stories remain popular today.
